First Scary Moment ...

We gave him some cow's milk - apparently he's having some sort of allergic reaction - been on the phone (yay for Skype!) with the Pediatrician back home twice already ... gave him some Benadryl for the small hives and some Tylenol for a very mild fever ... first time parents, half a world away, KINDA FREAKING OUT a bit. I think we're allowed to.

The nurse at our Pediatrician's office has been very helpful but if anyone has any stories of toddler allergic reactions please post them or email us, we'd love some reassurance that we're not overreacting ...

Edit: I'm on IM as 'hdvideoengineer' and Skype as 's.malkie' if you want to talk real-time!

Edit 2: the benadryl seems to have worked a bit, the welts have disappeared - and he's sleeping like a rock - the tylenol seems to have help with the temp, it's down as well. We're gonna take shifts sleeping and keep a close eye on him until the morning ...

Edit 3: holy crap, I now feel the same way about Benadryl as I did about Boone's Farm when I was in college - "I don't know who the heck invented this stuff but it is the magic liquid I've been looking for to get what I want" - Van is up and fine and running and cheery and his usual good-natured self. Momma and he just went down to breakfast and I'm following them down momentarily. Crisis averted, for now. New post later today, after shopping and packing!

I'm not a parent yet but i totally don't think your freaked out, and sounds like you handled it the way every other parent would handle a scary situation like that.

Wow! That's quite a scarey moment to have 1/2 a world away. Logan is allergic to cow's milk - fever and rash, no welts. It will subside (sp?), really, really should not get worse. Bennadryl is the cure all.
Geesh - hang in there, almost home... 48 hours is a long time, it'll pick up once today (tomorrow?) gets here, you'll be on the go and then busy traveling - well, until that 36 hour flight home. eeks! Prayers for Van's recovery and speedy/safe traveling.

Tracey - I love the pic of you and Van and the ball - looks like some major cuddlin' time - too cute!

Your handling the reaction well. The medicine will do the trick. Calm down & do your packing. Van will be OK.
Have a safe, quite trip. You'll all feel better when you get home and so will the rest of us.

love,

ma & dick

I know it's scary when they don't fell good and you feel so helpless. . .but you did the right thing, pretty soon it will be second nature. . .you're almost home.
Much love and blessings,

We can't begin to tell you how incredibly happy we are that you finally have your son!! What a BEAUTIFUL little guy! He is such a blessing and he is just as blessed to have the two of you as parents. What a wonderful family you make! May God bless you in your journey together. We can't wait to meet him! :)

P.S. Brandon has had some allergic reactions to insect bites and has had the hives as well. Yes, it was a little scary but all is well when you have Benadryl in the medicine cabniet. He'll be fine. Don't worry!! :)

Oh beloved Benadryl...mainstay of the medicine cabinet! He'll be FINE! (and your panic is simply testimony to your committed and loving parenting!) Other over the counters of note for future bulk purchase: Children's Motrin AND Tylenol (to dole out alternately in 3 hour cycles for the super-strains of fever), Mylanta (if he's a gassy Gus), Pedialyte (always have a few standing by...and I don't wish that on you anytime soon...)and a sturdy stock of saltines standing by...oh,the Lages have all sorts of pharmacological experience! Bring that boy home and we'll talk Tylenol et al! ;)

All joking aside, we love you guys...can hardly wait to see the real-life manifestation of what you've documented so beautifully in words and still images.

Wishing you safe travels and fun flight!

GEEZ...I've been trying to master this damn blog thing since before you left...at work someone does it for me...and everyday I thought I was sending you some sort of email...I'm such an assbag...but alas, I think I've finally created an account (maybe)!
I could write a book about
Tucker's allergic reaction to cow's milk...he went through cow's, then sow, and stuck with rice milk...and that's the only milk he will drink til this day (and he's 8)never a fever or rash, just projectile pyrotechnics... often fun at restaurants. I can't believe you guys are coming home. I am so proud of both of you. The man looks amazing...and you two look like such natural parents. Scott...I can't wait to hear your voice. I love you both dearly, be safe...please let him know there is someone that can't wait to meet him,hug him, and love him...and that's his Uncle VAN.
